8.3-3 A scuba tank (see figure) is being designed for an internal pressure of 12 MPa with a factor of safety of 2.0 with respect to yielding. The yield stress of the steel is 300 MPa in tension and 140 MPa in shear. (a) If the diameter of the tank is 150 mm, what is the minimum required wall thickness? (b) If the wall thickness is 6 mm, what is the maximum acceptable internal pressure? Note: Per instructions for Section 8.3, the given diameter is assumed to be an inside dimension and the pressure is gage pressure.
