Figure P5.2: A simply supported beam \(AC\) of length \(L\) carries a concentrated downward load \(P\) at point \(B\). The distance from support \(A\) to point \(B\) is \(a\), and the distance from point \(B\) to support \(C\) is \(b\). Thus, \(L = a + b\).
